Undergraduate Jury Exams

Jury exams for Spring 2026 will take place on Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29 in Harkness Chapel and Spartan Rehearsal Hall.

Capstone presentations will take place late afternoon on Tuesday, April 28 in the Harkness Classroom.

ℹ️ Please note: Jury exams are conducted as closed sessions to support a focused and equitable evaluation environment. Attendance is limited to the performing student, assigned faculty evaluators, and designated student assistants (for recording).


Jury Requirements

All undergraduate music majors must complete three juries as part of their degree requirements: 

Progress Jury (MUAP 10)
Taken at the end of the first year of applied study on the primary instrument. The Progress Jury must be taken when a student is enrolled in MUAP 122. Students may not continue to MUAP 221 until this requirement is fulfilled.

Level Jury (MUAP 20)
Taken at the end of the second year of applied study on the primary instrument. The Level Jury must be taken when a student is enrolled in MUAP 222. Students may not continue to MUAP 321 until this requirement is fulfilled.

Exit Jury (MUAP 30 for BA - or - MUAP 35 for BS)
Required for all students at the completion of their applied study.

  • BA students: Sixth semester of applied study (enrolled in MUAP 322)
  • BS students: Seventh semester of applied study (enrolled in MUAP 323)

Scoring & Feedback

Your final grade (Pass / No Pass) is based on your total average score. 

Passing Score Guidelines

  • Perfect Score: 49
  • Progress Jury (MUAP 10): 21 or higher
  • Level Jury (MUAP 20): 29 or higher
  • Exit Jury (MUAP 30/35): 37 or higher

Faculty and applied instructors will submit scores and comments through a Qualtrics Survey. Students will receive copies via email along with their final grade.


Preparing for Your Jury Exam

Jury Substitutions
Submit a Jury Petition Form by Week 8 of the current semester if requesting a substitution with the Concerto Competition or a student recital. 

Accompanist Requests & Final Repertoire
Submit your Accompanist Request Form, including final repertoire and piano parts, at least four weeks before your assigned jury date.

Ronis Recital Applicants (Spring only)
Submit the Joan Terr Ronis Memorial Recital Application by April 1. All undergraduate music majors can apply for this recital prize.

Jury Day Reminders

  • Closed Exam Format: Only the performing student, assigned faculty evaluators, and designated student assistants (for recording) will be present.
  • Arrival: Arrive early, check in with a student assistant or department staff member, warm up, and be ready to perform.
  • Attire: Wear appropriate performance attire.
  • Time Limit: Jury slots are limited 15 minutes. 
  • Recording: Your performance may be recorded for evaluation and departmental assessment. Personal recording devices are not permitted. 
  • Warm-Up Spaces: The Denison Classroom, Harkness Classroom, and all practice rooms are reserved for warm-up.
  • Popular Voice Juries: A microphone and speaker will be available. Student should be familiar with operating the sound equipment in Harkness Chapel. Contact Hudson Brett to schedule a tutorial if needed.
  • Ronis Recital Applicants (Spring only): Video recording will be reviewed by a selection committee. Students may request a copy of their recording.
