About The Program
Bruno Lunkes presents (Gut) String Theory: Measurements of Acoustical Properties of Gut Strings, a DMA lecture-recital offering a unique opportunity to hear and compare historical string types in performance. Featuring works by Dario Castello, Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, Jean-Féry Rebel, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the program examines the acoustical properties of gut strings, highlighting how variations in their construction shape tone, color, and articulation.

About The Artist
Bruno Lunkes is a Cleveland-based violinist specializing in historically informed performance. He has studied with leading figures in early music, including Luís Otávio Santos, Jaap ter Linden, and Julie Andrijeski, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Historical Performance Practice at Case Western Reserve University.
He has performed with prominent artists such as Monica Huggett, Catherine Manson, Lucy Russell, and Enrico Gatti, and has appeared at major festivals including the Oregon Bach Festival’s Berwick Academy, the Boston Early Music Festival Fringe Series, the Early Music America Young Performers Festival, and the Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival. His ensemble work includes collaborations with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Spire Chamber Ensemble, L’Invenzione, and Bach Society Brazil, as well as touring along the East Coast with the Smithsonian Academy Orchestra.
In 2026, he was selected to participate in the Smithsonian Haydn Quartet Academy, where he performed on rare instruments by Jacob Stainer, Nicola Amati, and Antonio Stradivari from the collections of the National Museum of American History and the Library of Congress.

Venue Information
Florence Harkness Memorial Chapel (est. 1902) offers a warm, intimate, and acoustically resonant setting on the Mather Quad. This neo-Gothic landmark commemorates the brief life of Florence Harkness Severance and reflects Cleveland’s rich cultural and philanthropic history. Designed by architect Charles F. Schweinfurth, the chapel is renowned for its soaring arches, exquisite woodwork, and luminous Tiffany stained-glass windows.
