Itoro “Rachelle” Akpanumoh - Austin, TX

A native Texan, I earned a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston before
completing an M.S. in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience at the University of Texas at Dallas.
It was during this graduate program when my interest in healthcare first developed. Taking a
more scenic and non-traditional path, I spent over a decade in the OR as a neuromonitoring
technologist, where I gained a deep appreciation for the unique role of the anesthesia providers
I worked alongside. The combination of meaningful patient interaction, hands-on care,
teamwork, and real-time clinical decision making drew me to the CAA profession. I am looking
forward to being fully immersed in anesthesia early on during didactic and clinical training at
CWRU and am excited for a direct patient care focused career with an extremely valuable team
centered approach. I am eager to train at such a well-established, proven program with
supportive faculty and staff and a strong history of cultivating many skilled CAAs who continue
to advance education, training, and the profession forward–something I hope to contribute to in
the future. Studying at the Austin campus is especially meaningful to me because my family and
I have called the beautiful Texas Hill Country home for several years and enjoy its myriad of
outdoor activities.

Saniyasnain Ali - Houston, TX

My interest in pursuing the Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) program at Case Western Reserve University comes from both my academic background and my hands-on experience in healthcare. During my undergraduate studies, along with my work in a hospice setting, I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to care for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Being part of that environment taught me how important empathy, clear communication, and teamwork are in delivering quality care. What draws me to the anesthesiologist assistant profession is the balance between critical thinking, technical skill, and direct patient impact. I’m excited by the responsibility of helping ensure patient safety and comfort during procedures, while also working closely with a surgical team in a fast-paced setting. CWRU’s MSA program especially appeals to me because of its strong clinical training and supportive learning environment. As I move forward, I hope to carry my experiences with me and continue to grow into someone who is both skilled and compassionate. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to patient care while building trust with those I serve.

Muhamed Alzuad - Houston, TX

Born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, my passion for healthcare began early on, where I sought to be a professional that could make a tangible difference in the well-being of a patient. Attending Wayne State University in Detroit provided me with additional motivation and insight into providing much needed support to vulnerable populations. While obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, I worked as a research assistant at The Heart of Detroit Study, where I visited participants in their homes, built relationships and trust, and witnessed first-hand the subpar living conditions that many face daily.Working as a medical assistant in pain management at Detroit Medical Center taught me the importance of teamwork, attention to detail, and empathetic patient interaction, factors I looked for in a future career. My introduction to the operating room and the collaboration within the anesthesia care team solidified my interest in the Anesthesiologist Assistant career path, and the experience I gained as a research and medical assistant has provided me with the necessary tools to succeed in this rigorous program. The factors that excite me most about the AA profession are the ability to provide comfort and safety to vulnerable patients, serve underserved communities, and work in collaboration with skilled anesthetists. Case Western is one of the most renowned AA programs with extensive resources that shape students for success, and the ability to train at the Texas Medical Center and perform high-acuity procedures is extremely valuable in preparation to become an anesthesia provider.

Jacob Anderson - Cleveland, OH

My name is Jake Anderson and I was raised in West Michigan in a suburb of Grand Rapids. After graduating from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiological Sciences, I spent several years in Utah working in a lab, at an environmental nonprofit, and in construction - learning that hands-on work is where I thrive. A book about the frontline workers of deadly infectious disease outbreaks pulled me into epidemiology, where I worked for three years before recognizing that I wanted to be closer to the patient. That search led me to discover the CAA profession and it felt like an immediate fit - hands-on applied physiology, high stakes, and direct patient care. When my Dad was rushed into surgery after being hit by a car, the care team’s calm confidence and reassurance that he was in good hands helped carry my family through the fear. That is what I want to give to patients. What an opportunity and privilege it is to be able to pursue that purpose at Case Western Reserve University.

Tristan Anderson - Lubbock, TX

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas and attended Texas Tech University where I earned a degree in marketing. I originally sought to be a dentist and felt a business background would serve me well, but ultimately transitioned to pursue medical school. I first heard about this profession scrolling social media, and was immediately drawn to the technical and patient care aspect of it. Shadowing was a phenomenal experience and I felt as if I could truly make a difference in how patients perceived being in a medical setting. I’ve loved doing highly technical, detail-oriented projects for as long as I can remember, and I am incredibly grateful to have found a career that is an excellent blend of all the things I love. CWRU’s MSA program is one of the most highly regarded in the country, and I am very excited to become a CAA under their instruction.

Jacob Bartelt - Cleveland, OH

I grew up in a small town in southeastern Wisconsin and studied political science and German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After graduation, I worked as a paralegal in a criminal defense firm–intending to apply to law school–but eventually I realized that career path wasn’t for me. I first learned I have a passion for medicine as a software tester at Epic (I also learned I did not have a passion for software testing). I shadowed anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and CAAs to develop an understanding of medical science and the software needs of clinicians. Out of intense curiosity I often asked questions about anesthesia practice, and over time I realized how thoroughly I enjoyed being in the OR and guiding patients through their medical journeys. I took a leap of faith and quit my job to go back to school to complete the prerequisite science courses. I’m so happy I decided to pursue this field because I love the intellectual breadth and human connection anesthesiology brings with it. As tough as it has been getting here, I am (in hindsight) thankful for these challenges because I became a more resilient version of myself. I’m also grateful my path wasn’t straightforward because the advocacy skills I learned through my political and legal background will make me a better champion of patient rights. I’m particularly excited to study at CWRU because of how quickly we begin our OR immersion. I can’t wait to meet everyone and start this next chapter of my life!

Layann Bashir - Washington, D.C.

At a young age, I was exposed to the realities of wounds, blood, and trauma. I grew up primarily outside of the U.S., in Saudi Arabia and Sudan. Living in Sudan and witnessing violent protests, along with the lack of medical equipment to treat injured protesters, is what first drew me to the medical field. In those moments, although I did not yet have the skills or knowledge, I felt a strong desire to help in any way I could. That desire stayed with me and gradually developed into a passion and a commitment to becoming a CAA. After moving back to the U.S. to continue my education, I sought opportunities that would allow me to better understand patient care in practice. I volunteered in a hospital setting, worked as a patient advocate, and served as a medical assistant in an ENT clinic. These experiences strengthened my interest in becoming a CAA and confirmed my desire to take on a more active, hands-on role in patient care. I am especially drawn to the responsibility of the profession and the opportunity to make an immediate impact on patient outcomes. I look forward to learning alongside motivated students in CWRU’s MSA program. I am grateful for the opportunity to gain early clinical exposure, as I learn best when I can actively apply didactic knowledge in real clinical settings. I am excited to continue developing the skills needed to fulfill my dream of becoming a CAA and being part of the anesthesia care team!

Biruk Belachew - Washington, D.C.

I grew up in Ethiopia and later moved to the United States to pursue my undergraduate studies in Biology, eventually completing my degree at York University in Canada. During that time, I worked as a research assistant and volunteered with organizations focused on human rights, cultural engagement, and peer mentoring. Those experiences helped me grow not just academically, but also in how I connect with and support others. I first learned about the AA role while caring for a family member in the hospital right after graduation. Being in that environment and watching different healthcare professionals work together to care for one patient made a strong impression on me. It pushed me to learn more about the allied health professions, and I became particularly interested in the AA role. To learn more, I shadowed AAs and anesthesiologists and saw firsthand how they work together as a cohesive team communicating constantly and backing each other up to keep the patient safe. What drew me to anesthesia was how hands-on it is and the ability to see the impact of your work in real time. I also value the balance of independence and teamwork within the ACT model. I am excited to train at CWRU DC, and I am confident that its strong foundation in training and mentorship will prepare me to grow into a capable and dependable AA.

Payton Bennett - Washington, D.C.

I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from Rhodes College with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. As an undergraduate student I was fortunate enough to gain experience in many healthcare disciplines. I did an internship in internal medicine during my senior year, where I was introduced to the role of healthcare providers who used their expertise and accessible resources to advocate for patients that oftentimes could not or did not know how to advocate for themselves. It was there where I decided I wanted to pursue a medical career where I could do the same. Along with working in primary care among other procedural based specialties like dermatology, I have had the pleasure of shadowing in surgery. The high level of communication, problem solving, and technical skill required in the operating room, combined with my chemistry background and love for pharmacology piqued my interest in pursuing a career in anesthesia. Shadowing anesthetists working within the Anesthesia Care Team Model solidified my decision to pursue a master’s degree in anesthesia. CWRU DC was my top choice program due to its incredible reputation, clinical sites, location, and emphasis on early integration into the clinical setting. I am very excited to begin the next steps in becoming a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant and look forward to growing as a future provider at CWRU.

These experiences, along with my clinical experience and shadowing hours in the operating room, showed me that anesthesia was the route for me. The mix between biology and chemistry in this field, the hands-on nature of the job, and being able to apply knowledge from the classroom to provide the best patient care, make it exactly what I want from a medical career. After touring Case Western Reserve University’s Austin campus and seeing how the students and staff were like one big family, along with the simulation lab and the variety in clinical sites, I knew it was where I wanted to further my education. I’m incredibly grateful to be attending CWRU’s MSA program in Austin to become part of the next generation of high quality anesthesia care providers alongside the class of 2028!

Edward Ice - Washington, D.C.

Throughout my education, I have consistently set goals focused on expanding my knowledge of healthcare and helping others. I first explored this path as a lifeguard at my community pool, assisting with minor injuries and emergencies. During my undergraduate studies, I became an EMT and later worked for an interfacility transport company, where I helped patients move safely between hospitals or return home. These experiences have taught me the importance of competence in building trust—patrons and patients felt safe because I understood my role and could perform it well. Working alongside paramedics provided exposure to many of the same skills used by anesthesiologist assistants, and sparked a desire to develop those skills and abilities to take on greater responsibility and advance in the field. The master’s program at Case Western aligns well with my goals and represents the next step in my education. I look forward to gaining the knowledge and training necessary to provide safe, effective care for patients.

Lenny Jacome Yshii - Houston, TX

I had always been fascinated by insects. Growing up in Brooklyn, I was constantly looking for critters hiding under bricks and flower pots, observing them for hours. Eventually, much to the annoyance of my mother, I began keeping them in jars filled with soil and weeds. What had started as childhood curiosity became a lasting interest in biology. As my terrariums grew in complexity and I began studying at Stony Brook University, I started to recognize connections between the ecosystems I was creating and the anatomy and physiology of the human body. That same interest in maintaining stable terrariums had evolved into a deeper curiosity about how the human body functioned and stayed in balance. As I learned more about human biology, I was drawn to the compassion and dedication of those who made it their mission to keep patients safe and healthy, which ultimately led me to switch from a Biology to a Health Science major. From there, I began shadowing and working as a medical assistant in various specialties, where I saw how medical professionals used both their knowledge and interpersonal skills to understand patients, build trust, and guide care. Those experiences drew me to anesthesia and to CWRU’s MSA program, where I hope to further develop the knowledge, discipline, and compassion needed to care for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Rosa Lee - Washington, D.C.

I was born in Korea and immigrated to the U.S. at seven, eventually settling in Katy, Texas, where I grew up. In 2023, I graduated from UT Austin with a B.S. in Psychology. From childhood, becoming a physician was the only path I ever imagined — a goal rooted in a family health crisis that showed me how much a compassionate healthcare team can matter. Through college and my gap years, I built toward that goal as a pediatric medical assistant, on medical missions in Mexico, in a psychiatrist's practice, at a startup serving children with special health needs, in opioid crisis research, and as a Crisis Text Line counselor. It wasn't until after my medical school acceptance that I began to honestly question whether that path was truly the right fit. Then I underwent surgery of my own. Being on the other side of the table changed my perspective entirely — and the CAA who cared for me that day planted a seed I couldn't ignore. What drew me further was the directness of the path: a focused, guaranteed route into anesthesia. The CAA profession brings together everything I value: clinical skill, human connection, and team-based care, with the freedom to build a balanced life. I chose CWRU's D.C. location specifically for the opportunity to participate in medical missions, something that speaks directly to my background and belief that healthcare should reach people wherever they are. I'm excited to begin this journey at a program with decades of experience and strong clinical networks.

As I advance in this field, I aim to become a thoughtful, attentive anesthesiologist assistant who prioritizes patient safety and comfort while also contributing to the continued growth of the profession.

Kenneth Ngo - Houston, TX

Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, I eventually settled in Dallas in 2015. My path to healthcare is rooted in a lifelong fascination with how things work; while I initially considered engineering because I loved building and problem-solving, I soon realized that the biological sciences offered a way to apply that same technical curiosity to the human body. I majored in Biology at the University of Texas at Dallas, gaining clinical experience as a medical scribe and EMT. These roles were transformative, fueling my desire to have a direct, meaningful impact on patients' lives. After graduating in 2023, I discovered the Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) profession. Shadowing in the field confirmed that anesthesia perfectly synthesizes technical precision with the compassionate patient connection I valued as an EMT. Now having the incredible chance to attend CWRU-Houston, I am excited to be able to study anesthesia at the world’s largest medical center knowing that I will be learning from amazing faculty and colleagues through a diverse range of cases. I am certain that my time here will prepare me immensely in being a highly capable anesthesia provider.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, I attended the University of Texas at Dallas, where I graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology. Initially, I was drawn to pharmacy and found work as a pharmacy technician. This was an invaluable first step into healthcare and where I realized my love of working with a wide variety of medications. However, I wanted more meaningful interactions with patients and decided to look elsewhere. During my search, a family member introduced me to the possibility of becoming a certified anesthesiologist assistant. A career that could offer the opportunity to nurture my love of pharmacology, gain more fulfilling patient interaction, and ability to work collaboratively within a team. I would have a more active role in helping guide patients through an extremely vulnerable time, as well as be their advocate when they themselves could not. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to work as an anesthesia technician, which allowed me to immerse myself in the world of anesthesia and the environment of the operating room. Through that experience, I further solidified and confirmed my passion for anesthesia and the CAA profession. When it comes to training: CWRU's storied history, distinguished reputation, and early clinical exposure captured my attention from the start. I am both thrilled and proud to attend Case Western Reserve University's MSA program.

I was especially inspired by the balance of technical skill, real time decision making, and patient advocacy that defines the role. My time volunteering at Texas Children’s Hospital further reinforced the importance of attentiveness and empathy, teaching me how small, intentional actions can make a meaningful difference in a patient’s experience. I’m excited to join CWRU because of its strong reputation for clinical training and collaborative learning environment. I look forward to developing into a skilled, compassionate anesthetist and contributing to a profession that blends science, precision, and human connection.

Tyler Nguyen - Cleveland, OH

“Just another day at work” is not a phrase that could ever describe a day in the life of a CAA. After shadowing for quite some time, I realized how easily they are able to mask the countless calculations and considerations necessary to keep a patient alive during surgery. CAA’s play a unique role: they are present with the patient throughout the entire case, preinduction to the PACU. They are responsible for the comfort and wellbeing of the patient at a very stressful and vulnerable time in their life. I can’t think of a more magical role to have than that. Throughout my undergraduate career at UNC Chapel Hill, I was able to explore several fields within biological science. My experience in the Biomedical Engineering program has shaped my leadership and group problem solving skills, while spending time with research has broadened my critical thinking abilities. As an EMT, I learned the basics of patient care, where I could see the direct impact I could have on the condition of every patient I interacted with. At CWRU, these qualities are especially stressed and developed. Interacting with the student leaders highlighted the program’s value of professionalism, leadership, and advocacy, and I plan to use this support to mature into someone who can also inspire others. Combined with the state of the art facilities and thoroughly dedicated instructional and clinical team, I know that my talents will translate to being the best CAA I can be.

Charles Nnake - Houston, TX

I’m a first generation Nigerian-American, but also a born and raised Houstonian. My initial exposure to healthcare came from my mom. Seeing and hearing about her experiences as a nurse and eventually as a patient motivated my pursuit of a healthcare career. Working as a nuclear medicine technologist over the last 10 years, I’ve developed a passion for serving others that makes each day of work feel like an opportunity to do just that. My healthcare experiences and desire to do more for patients eventually led to my decision to become a CAA. I deeply appreciate the collaborative nature of healthcare, and my shadowing experiences helped show me how essential teamwork and collaboration are in anesthesia. Those experiences solidified my decision to pursue this career. Healthcare is about the heart we have for the patients we serve. That heart, along with a high level of proficiency, distinguishes an exceptional healthcare professional from a typical one. It is clear that the people involved in the CWRU MSA program have a people-focused mindset, and that is what makes it a great fit for me. Outside of healthcare, I enjoy exercise, cooking, sports, computers, and spending time with my loved ones. These interests have helped develop the attention to detail and ability to overcome adversity that will prove useful to me as an SAA and eventually as a CAA. I’m thrilled to be a part of this program and look forward to growing more as a person and as a professional.

Emma Saunders - Washington, D.C.

I grew up in Savannah, Ga with a family of healthcare professionals. My father was a graduate of Emory’s Anesthesiologist Assistant program, so I was exposed to the career at an early age. During high school and college, I worked as an anesthesia tech to further my exposure. It was in this job that I first learned the characteristics of an anesthetist: collaborative, adaptable, and compassionate. This also provided me with invaluable shadowing experiences where I saw their acuity in stressful situations and comforting perioperative care. After high school, I knew I wanted to enter into the medical field and attended the University of South Carolina as a cardiovascular technology major. The cardiovascular technology major combined 3 years of “pre-med” prerequisites followed by 1.5 years of invasive cardiovascular technology school and clinicals. I have spent the last year working as a cardiovascular technologist at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. My interest in anesthesia was solidified as I worked alongside the anesthesia teams during cardiac procedures and high risk circumstances. Not only was I enthralled with their work, but I noticed through development in my job that I was starting to mimic the necessary characteristics of a successful anesthesiologist assistant. I am excited to attend CWRU as I have seen firsthand the success of students from this university in clinical settings and their success later as certified anesthesiologist assistants.

They embody the professionalism, mentorship, and expertise that I one day hope to emulate. The emphasis on early clinical exposure and rigorous training allows students to become the best providers they can be. I am honored to join the MSA program at CWRU Cleveland Class of 2028 where I will grow as an anesthesia provider and become a leader with a voice for advocacy for the CAA profession.

Abeselom Weldemichael - Cleveland, OH

I’m originally from St. Louis, Missouri, and developed an interest in medicine from a young age, with a growing interest in the OR after shadowing at local hospitals. I graduated from Saint Louis University in 2023 and initially planned to pursue PA school, so I became an anesthesia technician to gain hands-on OR experience. In this role, I worked closely with CAAs and the anesthesia care team, gaining a deeper understanding of the OR environment. That experience prepared me for the demands of anesthesia and showed me what the field is like day to day. I was drawn to how CAAs apply physiology and pharmacology in real time while being directly involved in patient care, and I appreciated the team based environment and communication needed for each case. Working alongside Case Cleveland alumni made a strong impression on me and helped make the program a top choice. I am especially excited to begin at Case because of its early hands-on clinical experience and strong training. I also had a personal experience that shaped my perspective, as I required surgery and had to rely completely on the care team around me. That experience showed me how vulnerable patients are and reinforced my goal of becoming a provider who helps patients feel safe and supported. Although this will be my first time living outside of St. Louis, I felt at home in Cleveland and am excited to be part of the community.

Jessica Wharton - Lubbock, TX

I grew up in West Virginia and earned my undergraduate degree in Biology from West Virginia University. I’ve always known I wanted to go into the medical field and work directly with patients to provide care, so after graduation, I went to dental school. I practiced as a general dentist for seven years, moving from West Virginia to Pennsylvania, and finally settling in Texas. During that time, I developed clinical skills and learned how to care for patients calmly and effectively, even in stressful situations. Dentistry has been rewarding, however I found myself drawn to a career where patient care is the clear priority rather than balanced against production demands. That realization led me to pursue a career as an Anesthesiologist Assistant. Anesthesia combines the hands-on care and critical thinking I love with pharmacology, physiology, and meaningful teamwork. I chose CWRU because of the strong emphasis on a supportive learning environment and the program’s culture, as well as the early clinical exposure that allows students to truly develop and refine essential skills. I am genuinely excited to join CWRU and begin this next step in my journey.

Sylvan Wiley - Cleveland, OH

My earliest exposure to healthcare came at a young age when my younger brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and I watched my parents learn to manage his care with steadiness. That experience shaped my respect for caregiving. I first learned about the CAA profession through alumni of John Carroll University, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. Those experiences confirmed what I suspected early on: this career is a natural fit for who I am and how I work. My experiences in sports—specifically baseball and pitching—have shaped the way I handle pressure and make quick decisions. Watching CAAs work, I recognized the same rhythm: steady focus, clear communication, and the ability to stay composed when the situation demands it. What draws me to anesthesia is the combination of procedural precision, muscle memory, and rapid, deliberate decision‑making. Working as a nursing assistant grounded me in the human side of medicine. More importantly, it showed me the kind of caregiver I want to be, shaped by the examples of the people I worked alongside and the way they showed up for patients. I’m honored and excited to join the Cleveland cohort and begin my training with the CWRU MSA program.

This profession will allow me to continue learning throughout my career, whether through direct patient care, new medications and their implementation, or working as part of an anesthesia care team. This profession also offers the opportunity to participate in pivotal moments of a patient’s care, providing a communicative and compassionate environment while developing clinical skills and working closely with patients, their families, and the rest of the care team. The Case Western Reserve MSA program will grant me the experience and knowledge that will make me a skillful and adaptable anesthesiologist assistant in the future.

Edward Wu - Washington, D.C.

Shortly after being born in St. Louis, I moved to Montgomery County, Maryland, where I have since lived. During my childhood, both of my parents were researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health, whom I attribute to the origins of my passion for physiology. I went on to attend the University of Maryland, College Park, graduating summa cum laude with a BS in Biology, specializing in Neurobiology and Physiology. I was also part of the Integrated Life Sciences Honors program, where I performed research at the NIH on motor learning of preparatory activity in mice. However, it was during that time when I discovered the CAA profession as I was exploring career paths. In Fall 2023, I co-founded the Pre-Anesthesiologist Assistant Club at UMD (now boasting 3 alumni who are current Case DC SAAs). The CWRU MSA program in DC was one of the most helpful and informative resources we had for our club, as we partnered together to develop Health Professions Advising for pre-AAs at our school and to host a showcase of their MSA program at our club. Because of these experiences, I found that the more I learned about CAAs, the more I found the profession heavily resonating with my interests and values, including physiology, leadership, teamwork, and patient care. The early start in clinical settings and high-quality clinical sites are what further drew me to Case DC, but I am most excited to learn alongside my new peers and educators to become an excellent CAA.

Kylie Yardas - Austin, TX

Growing up, I moved around Texas before settling in the Hill Country just outside of Austin, where I’ve lived for the past decade. I’m a proud Texas Longhorn and earned my Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. There, I joined an alcohol withdrawal research lab, which deepened my interest in pharmacology. I also worked as a medical assistant throughout college in a podiatry clinic, where I learned how important teamwork is and how to connect with patients to build trust. I was first introduced to the CAA profession while observing a gangrenous toe amputation. Although I was there to observe the podiatrist, I found myself drawn behind the drape with the anesthesia team. Watching the CAA monitor vitals and make critical decisions while staying calm and collected was something I really admired. That’s when I knew this was the path I wanted. After shadowing through Case Western, I met preceptors and students and was struck by their confidence, capability, and professionalism in and out of the OR. After learning more about the program, I saw the value of early OR exposure and felt it set CWRU apart for me. I’m excited to work closely with a team, focus on one patient, and bring together physiology and pharmacology. I look forward to training with CWRU, staying in Austin, and combining my understanding of the human body with patient connection to support patients during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Kun Seo Yook - Washington, D.C.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to the United States with my family when I was four years old. I grew up in Anaheim, California, and went on to earn a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. As an undergraduate, I stepped into my first clinical role as a medical scribe, which introduced me to the meaningful impact of caregiving. To further develop my patient care experience, I worked as an EMT and surgical orderly during my gap years. Collaborating with healthcare teams in fast-paced environments strengthened my commitment to become a capable and confident provider, especially in moments when patients are most vulnerable. These experiences ultimately drew me to the CAA profession for its hands-on nature, emphasis on teamwork, and critical role in advocating for a patient’s wellbeing in the operating room. I am eager to join an incredible community of students and faculty at CWRU, and I look forward to making a tangible contribution to patients' lives.

Abbey Young - Austin, TX

Hi CWRU! I was born and raised in Plano, TX, and earned my undergraduate degree in Biology at The University of Oklahoma. Although I’ve always been interested in pursuing medicine, my path to the CAA profession wasn’t entirely straightforward. Hi CWRU! I was raised in Colorado Springs, CO. As an undergraduate student, I majored in Biochemistry at the University of Denver. During this time, I strengthened my foundations in biochemistry, working in a wet lab studying RNA and proteins. Beyond the classroom, I gained strong clinical skills working as an emergency medical technician on a 911 ambulance, in the emergency department, and at a ski clinic. These experiences cultivated my passion for hands-on patient care and teamwork in high-stakes medical environments. What excites me most about the anesthesiology assistant profession is its unique balance of technical precision, problem-solving, and teamwork. I’m drawn to the complexity of anesthesia management—maintaining safety, comfort, and stability throughout surgical procedures. CWRU’s rigorous curriculum, simulation-based training, and emphasis on clinical excellence align perfectly with my goals. I am particularly motivated by the opportunity to learn from experienced faculty and to be able to have early clinical experience. I hope to combine my scientific curiosity with compassionate patient care, collaborating with surgical teams to prioritize safety and excellence.

Andi Yuan - Washington, D.C.

I was raised in Virginia Beach surrounded by people working with each other to help the public. My mother and father both worked in the hospital so a lot of my friends growing up were the kids of my parents’ friends. I then went on to study biochemistry at Georgetown where I first began working as an EMT and a lab research assistant where problem solving was necessary and became a vital skill to inhabit. Multiple opportunities to shadow under different doctors and specialties introduced me to the field of anesthesia and this is where I first learned about what CRNAs and CAAs do. Here the idea of the anesthesia care team model really stood out to me and built upon my background of working with another EMT and other research assistants. I chose to apply to CWRU because my research had shown they were among the first programs to teach and certify CAAs, and that graduates often spearheaded new programs and legislation that led to the opening up of states to CAA providers. I am therefore incredibly grateful to not only be studying at CWRU but also to be at the DC location where we are primely positioned to affect legislation.

Lok Tung “Wind” Yuen - Houston, TX

After growing up in Hong Kong, I moved to the United States to pursue my undergraduate education at The University of Texas at Austin, earning a degree in biochemistry with a minor in business. During this time, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Experiencing medicine from the patient’s side taught me the importance of trust, steadiness, and clear communication. I shadowed anesthesia providers in Austin and San Antonio and was drawn to the level of skill, control and precision needed in such a high acuity field. Where illness once left me feeling powerless, medicine gave me purpose. To prepare for AA school, I worked as a phlebotomist at a plasma donation center before becoming a registered respiratory therapist (RT). In RT school, I trained in airway management, ventilator troubleshooting, intubation, extubation and arterial blood gas analysis. I recognize the immense trust placed in providers to make life-altering decisions: a responsibility I do not take lightly. Through RT training, I discovered that I thrive in programs that integrate didactic learning, simulation, and clinical experience. CWRU’s emphasis on early clinical exposure aligns with how I learn best and will further strengthen my clinical judgment and adaptability. I aspire to be an anesthesia provider who offers patients composure, precision, and compassion. As a former patient myself, I hope to heal others the way being a healthcare provider has helped heal me.

Connie Zeng - Cleveland, OH

Hi everyone! As a lifelong Ontario resident, I’m looking forward to finally bouncing across Lake Erie and becoming part of Case Western Cleveland. I attended the University of Toronto for my undergraduate studies and earned my Honours Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics, alongside a minor in English and a second minor in Biology. Outside of my studies, I’ve enjoyed work and extracurriculars in STEM outreach, healthcare, creative writing, and more. I was also heavily involved in exciting research in environmental bioremediation of the hydrocarbons in crude oil. While in school, I believed that I would continue to pursue research in my post-graduate studies and envisioned my next step being a master’s degree in genetics. Towards the end of school, as I was absorbed in concluding my exams, my undergraduate thesis, and my oral defense, I found I missed the human connection in my work and studies. From then, I pivoted into healthcare in order to couple the rigorous disciplines that I love with real, clinical applications. After a wonderful experience shadowing in the OR, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in anesthesia - and Case Western has been my goal from the start. I’m so excited to join a school renowned for its excellence in healthcare and for the opportunity to train at some of the world’s leading hospitals.

Cindy Zheng - Cleveland, OH

I’m from Kennesaw, Georgia, and I attended the University of Georgia, where I majored in Biology. I love exploring new places, new ideas, and new ways of helping people, and that curiosity led me to one of my most meaningful undergraduate experiences, traveling to rural Peru for a medical internship. Providing care with limited resources taught me the importance of compassion and teamwork, and that is where my passion for medicine began. When I returned to the U.S., I wanted more patient care interactions, so I volunteered at local clinics and hospitals. I learned that sometimes the most meaningful care is simply sitting with someone, listening, and making them feel safe enough to share their most vulnerable moments with you. Later, I discovered the CAA profession through UGA’s pre-AA club and felt drawn to it. Shadowing CAAs showed me what it means when we say, “We’ll be with you every step of the way.” The combination of physiology, vigilance, and advocacy is exactly what draws me to this profession, and through my experiences I have developed adaptability and compassion that I am eager to bring to CWRU. The program’s academic rigor will challenge me to think critically while collaborating effectively within a team. Its diverse clinical exposure will allow me to continue building autonomy and confidence, preparing me to face challenges and grow from them. I am grateful to join the CWRU MSA program and prove I will be an excellent Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant.
