New Research at the 2021 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting Captures SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Patterns in Vaccinated and Naturally Infected Individuals
UH researchers presented critical findings about COVID-19 immunity at the 2021 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo. The study led by Xiaochun Zhang, MD, PhD, UH Clinical Pathology, showed how antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus can vary between those who receive a COVID-19 vaccine and naturally infected individuals. The scientists tested three study groups: fully vaccinated health care workers, recovered health care workers with previous natural infection, and patients with active infection. Study results revealed fully vaccinated individuals had an average of 50-fold higher antibody levels than naturally infected, unvaccinated individuals. Further studies of the profile of vaccinated individuals versus those with breakthrough infections would be helpful in the identification of dosing schedules of booster vaccines.
