Withdrawal & Refund Schedule

The General Refund Schedule is listed in the tables below and applies to tuition and fees for course drops and term withdrawals.  The student's "date of withdrawal" is used to determine the sliding scale percentage refund of tuition and/or fees after the add/drop deadline.  When tuition is refunded at 100%, student fees are also refunded at 100%.  If tuition is refunded at any other percentage, student fees are NOT refunded.  Housing and meal plan charges have a separate refund policy and students should consult with the Housing and Meal Plan offices.

Summer refund schedule (deadline) for course drops is determined on a course-by-course basis.  After the drop deadline for each summer session, a sliding scale percentage refund of tuition is used for individual course drops.  After the add/drop period for Fall and Spring, the sliding scale percentage refunds applies if ALL courses are dropped (meaning a student must do a term withdrawal to receive the sliding scale percentage for the Fall and Spring semesters).  Therefore, there are NO refunds for individual courses dropped after the add/drop period for the Fall and Spring semesters.  Please refer to the tables below for refund deadlines for each academic year.

Fall and Spring General Refund Schedule

Week of Semester % of Tuition Refunded % of Fees Refunded
Week 1 & 2 100% 100%
Week 3 75% 0%
Week 4 50% 0%
Week 5 25% 0%
Week 6 - End of Semester 0% 0%

Students receiving financial aid should be aware that if they withdraw before 10 weeks have elapse, federal aid funds shall be returned to the federal government.  Therefore, they may effectively pay more if they had attended for the full semester and received their full allocation of financial aid.  Please consult with the Financial Aid Office about how your withdrawal may impact your financial aid.

Students receiving Tuition Assistance (TA) funds for eligible U.S. Service members should be aware that if they withdraw during the add/drop period, the university returns all the TA funds to the government.  After the add/drop period and before the 60% point in the term, TA funds shall be returned to the government using a pro-rata schedule based upon the amount of time the student spent in attendance using the Federal Student Aid formula to determine the amount of TA funds the student earned at the time of withdrawal.  Any unearned TA funds are then returned to the government.  At or after the 60% point in the term, the student has earned 100% of their TA funds.  Learn more about Return of Unearned TA Funds

Fall 2020 and Spring 2021

Thank you for your patience as we finalize the Spring 2021 term withdrawal deadlines following the Oct. 2 announcement about Spring 2021 academic calendar changes.  For questions, please contact our office or your school's Registrar.  Please see explanations on how the January session course drops/withdraws will impact tuition refund (adjustments).

  • For those students registered for the January session in a program with a per-credit hour rate, tuition will be assessed at the per-credit hour rate for the registered credit hours for the Spring semester, including the January session credit hours.
  • For those students registered for the January session in a program with a per-semester rate, tuition will be assessed at the per-semester rate for the Spring semester, including the January session credit hours.
  • After the add/drop deadline for the January and Regular sessions-
    • Tuition refund (adjustment) for the January session course(s) applies to individual course drops or withdraws.
    • Tuition refund (adjustment) for the Regular Spring Session applies if ALL Regular Spring Session courses are dropped or withdrawn.  Students may not see the tuition refund (adjustments) for the dropped or withdrawn January session course if the Regular Spring Session courses continues to meet the condition for the per-semester rate (for example, undergraduate students taking 12 or more credit hours in the Regular Spring Session are assessed the per-semester rate).
    • For those students in programs with a per-semester rate taking fewer than 12 credit hours in the Regular Spring session and the January session course(s) gets the student to 12 or more credit hours, the tuition refund (adjustment) for the dropped January course will be calculated using the difference between the per-semester rate and tuition for the remaining registered courses.  This would apply if the student does not add enough credits to the Regular Spring session to be back at per-semester rate.  Please contact Student Financial Services at studentaccounts@case.edu as it relates to your specific account.
  • Please note that if a student has financial aid, a reduction to tuition charges will result in an adjustment to the student's financial aid. Questions concerning financial aid for students taking fewer than 12 credit hours in the regular spring semester who withdraw from a January class should be addressed to the Office of University Financial Aid at 216/368-4530 or financialaid@case.edu
