CWRU Student Code of Conduct changes and other updates

Dear students,

With a new academic year nearing, I wanted to reach out in my new role as dean of students to share important updates about resources and policies at Case Western Reserve University.

Student Code of Conduct

The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards regularly reviews and updates the Student Code of Conduct, which conveys the policies, values, beliefs, standards and expectations we share as a community.

Among this year’s adjustments:

  • Recreational marijuana: While Ohio law permits recreational marijuana usage for those over 21, Case Western Reserve, as a federally funded institution, must follow federal law. Any possession or use of marijuana remains prohibited on university property.
  • Misrepresentation with artificial intelligence: Unauthorized use of generative AI tools in materials submitted to the university for administrative purposes is prohibited.
  • Student organization accountability: Language has been strengthened to clarify that the Student Code of Conduct applies to student organizations as well as individual students.
  • Conduct process updates:
    • The conduct hearing process may be expedited in exceptional circumstances with university-wide impact.
    • Conduct cases that may lead to disciplinary probation may be resolved through the administrative hearing process.
    • The university may petition to appeal hearing outcomes.

Please take action to familiarize yourself with the Student Code of Conduct, as it is the responsibility of every CWRU student to understand and comply with the policies, protocols, and requirements set forth by the university.

Dean of Students Office resources

In addition, take time to explore the Dean of Students website for a range of resources available to you, from academics to health and wellness to food and housing.

As your new dean of students, I am here to help you connect to resources throughout your educational journeys. Each of you come from different backgrounds and have a wide range of life experiences. It’s these unique qualities that, when combined, create the rich, dynamic community for which Case Western Reserve is known.
