UTech provides the following services for supporting scholarly activity—many of these services are provided for free or at a minimum cost. These services are available to support the server centralization effort:

Google drive logo

Google Drive is a cloud-based service that provides the CWRU community with unlimited space for storing files. Drive can be used to automatically synchronize the latest version of your file across the network and all your devices. It can be used to store files up to 5 TB in size, so it is suitable for storing many types of image data. With Drive, files can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop or desktop running iOS, Android, OS X, Chrome OS or Windows. Files can be accessed via the native web interface or, with Box Drive, integrated with the file browsing application on the smartphone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop or desktop. Note: Drive is part of a larger suite of Google productivity applications known as G-Suite. Google Drive is not approved for restricted data.

Box is a cloud-based service that provides the CWRU community with unlimited space for storing files. Box Drive can be used to automatically synchronize the latest version of your files across the network and all your devices. It can be used to store files up to 15 GB in size, so it may not be suitable for storing some types of image data. With Box, files can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop or desktop running iOS, Android, OS X, Chrome OS or Windows. Files can be accessed via the native web interface or, with Box Drive, integrated with the file browsing application on the smartphone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop or desktop. Box is approved for restricted data, but is not approved for personal health information without further consultation with the Information Security Office.

The research data storage service provides easy, reliable and immediate access to data from on-campus offices (as a mapped drive in Windows or a Network File System (NFS) mounted file system in Linux) as well as from the High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Data is protected by a seven-day snapshot schedule for recovery of accidentally deleted files or reversion to an earlier version of a file and optional replication between the two CWRU data centers to protect against a data center disaster.  Research data storage is not approved for restricted data.

Research archive storage provides the CWRU research community with an option to store data that has long-term value. The system archives data generated from research activities and allows for convenient movement of large and diverse datasets into a UTech-managed system. Research archive storage is not approved for restricted data.

virtual machine graphic

The research virtual machine service provides virtual machines to the CWRU research community to host applications such as databases and other research-related system components. Research virtual machine service is not approved for restricted data.

The Server Colocation service was created to enable faculty, schools and/or departments on campus to free up physical floor space in their areas by removing the servers, switches and storage devices and moving them into one of the UTech data centers. No cost is associated with server colocation.
