The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) community gathered for the Ohio Cancer Research (OCR) Star Award Gala on Nov. 13, 2024, to celebrate two of Case CCC's biggest stars—Director Gary Schwartz, MD, and long-time member Sanford "Sandy" Markowitz, MD, PhD.
OCR opens doors that save lives by funding cancer researchers to help get their projects off the ground. In 1993, Markowitz received $40,000 in seed funding from OCR, which kickstarted his groundbreaking advances in the detection and treatment of colon cancer and created the legend we know today.
But it takes great leaders like Schwartz, who took on the role of Case CCC director in April 2023, to help doctors like Markowitz and other Case CCC members reach their full potential.
Both Schwartz and Markowitz were honored at this year's gala for their decades of dedication to cancer research, education, and care.
