The focus of my cancer research is to uncover biopsychosocial targets to inform behavioral health interventions. The aims of my dissertation project titled, “Depressive Symptoms and Survival AmongLung Cancer Patients: Biomarkers and Potential Benefits of an iPod- and Mindfulness-basedIntervention,” is a reflection of this and set the stage for this line of work. The aims of the dissertation project were to explore the mechanistic role of cellular aging (telomeres) and stress (cortisol) in predicting survival as well as pilot test a digital mindfulness-based intervention. During my NIH-funded T32 fellowship, I co-facilitated a cancer support group and tested the outcomes of theSurvivorship Wellness Group Program, which is a multi-disciplinary group intervention designed to help cancer survivors learn skills to optimize eight domains of health after treatment (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, sleep). I was also the PI of a grant-funded pilot study that assessed daily fluctuations in psychological experiences (rumination) and health behaviors (physical activity) and provided preliminary proof of interest in a text-delivered MBI among post-treatment breast cancer patients.This work informed my NIH-funded Career Development Award (K23; https://reporter.nih.gov/search/rF5ehaFENEu7ssAc_PsRWQ/projects) focused on developing and pilot testing a novel format for delivering core components of an evidence-based intervention for depressive symptoms in cancer survivors to increase accessibility and scalability of mindfulness-based interventions. In addition to authoring 10+ manuscripts on cancer, I have also been invited to serve on two expert panels sponsored by national societies (the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Society of Integrative Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology).
