Case CCC Molecular Oncology Program member Khalid Sossey-Alaoui, PhD, and Immune Oncology Program member Amar Desai, PhD, are co-investigators on a multi-institutional study examining small extracellular vesicles (sEVs)—microscopic particles released by breast cancer cells that can alter distant tissues and help create conditions favorable for metastasis. They received a five-year, $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate how these mechanisms enable breast cancer to spread to distant organs.
The team will focus on Kindlin-2 (K2), a protein identified in both cancer cells and sEVs, and investigate whether disrupting K2-containing vesicles could slow or prevent metastatic progression.
