Roy, Spratt, Ponsky, and Shoag Coauthor Study of Prebiopsy MRI Use in Prostate Cancer

Four Case CCC members — Lee Ponsky, MD (Cancer Imaging Program); Daniel Spratt, MD (Developmental Therapeutics Program); Soumyajit Roy, MD, MSc (Developmental Therapeutics Program); and Jonathan Shoag, MD (Population and Cancer Prevention Program) — are coauthors of a new research letter in JAMA Oncology examining trends in the use of MRI before prostate biopsy in the United States.

Line graph showing increased use of prebiopsy MRI from 2017 to June 2026, rising from about 14% to 64% among biopsy-naive patients and from about 38% to 67% among patients with a prior negative biopsy.

The study analyzed more than 505,000 prostate biopsies performed at U.S. hospitals between 2017 and June 2026. The researchers found that prebiopsy MRI use increased from 14% of first prostate biopsies in 2017 to 64% in the first half of 2026, reflecting a substantial increase in the adoption of MRI-guided approaches to prostate cancer diagnosis.
