Rui Amaral Mendes is a graduate of the University of Porto. He holds a PhD in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology from the VU Universiteit Amsterdam.
He is also an Invited Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (MEDCIDS - Department of Community Medicine, Information and Health Decision Sciences) and a researcher at CINTESIS@RISE, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (Clinical and Translational Research in Oncology), Porto, Portugal.
He held positions as Professor of Oral Medicine, Oral Oncology and Oral Surgery at the Catholic University of Portugal, Director of Specialized Master's Degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Pathology. He was also a Visiting Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan until 2014. In August 2015, he left these positions and became an Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University, in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences.
From 2014 to 2022 he served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and also served on the Board of the International Society of Oral Oncology until 2017.
He is also a researcher at CIPES - Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (University of Porto) and a member of the Social Accountability panel of the ASPIRE/AMEE - Association for Medical Education in Europe.
He is a Deputy Editor of the British Medical Journal - Case Reports, Associate Editor of the Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine and member of the editorial board of Oral Diseases. Moreover, he is an active reviewer for several scientific journals in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Surgery and Head and Neck cancer.
His areas of interest and expertise are Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders and Head and Neck Cancer, Oral Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Supportive Care in Cancer and Oral and Maxillofacial bone tumours.
