Becoming a Patient

Whether you are a new patient of the School of Dental Medicine or a former patient who is returning after an interruption in treatment, your dental needs will be evaluated in a two-appointment process. These appointments are necessary to determine whether your dental needs and expectations can be met in our student clinics. We hope that these visits help you understand your treatment options and estimated costs and assist you with making informed decisions before treatment begins.

Monday-Friday: 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

1st Appointment – Screening

You will be asked at this appointment to:

  • Complete a registration form, health questionnaire and financial agreement.
  • Bring current radiographs (x-rays) on film or compact disc (if additional radiographs are needed they will be taken at the first or second appointment and you will be charged accordingly).
  • After a brief oral evaluation, a faculty dentist will discuss your dental needs and concerns with you and determine if your treatment is appropriate for the student clinics. (The screening process is not a complete examination and the dentist will not provide a definitive treatment plan or cost estimate at this appointment.)
  • If approved, you will be assigned a student doctor and the 2nd appointment can be made.

2nd Appointment – Comprehensive Examination

Your second appointment will be with a student doctor who will complete thorough tooth-by-tooth examination. What you can expect at this appointment:

  • A treatment plan outlining and prioritizing your dental needs.
  • Estimated cost and time required for treatment.
  • Possible diagnostic casts made of your teeth.

Important Information About Dental Care in Our Clinics

  • Patients are expected to arrive on time for appointments and remain for the entire appointment.
  • Every effort is made to accommodate appointment changes, provided we have 24-hour notice to reschedule or cancel an appointment.
  • In an effort to ensure the safety and comfort of all, patients are asked to make arrangements for the care of young children and dependent adults during dental appointments. Children and dependent adults are not permitted in the treatment areas and should not be left unattended in any part of the building.
  • An hourly fee is charged for parking.
  • Cell phones must be turned off during dental appointments.
  • Case Western Reserve University is a smoke-free campus.
  • We accept various forms of payment: Cash, Check, Visa, Mastercard, and debit card. Moreover, various insurance plans such as: CareSource, Molina, United Healthcare, Paramount, Ohio Buckeye, and Ohio Medicaid are accepted.
