Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws and neck. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons care for adults and children who experience such conditions as problematic wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws. They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries and fractures, offer reconstructive and dental implant surgery, and care for patients with benign and malignant tumors and cysts of the jaws and functional and esthetic conditions of the maxillofacial areas.
The training of our surgical residents includes a four-year graduate degree in dentistry and the completion of a five-year hospital surgical residency program, which includes attending medical school to obtain a medical degree and a year of general surgery training.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences is a comprehensive unit encompassing all diagnostic disciplines of dental medicine. Our full-time members are board certified in their respective disciplines and offer full exposure to our students to routine patient screening and evaluation as well as diagnostic work-up of challenging cases. Our clinical services cover the School of Dental Medicine, the University Hospitals system (in collaboration with the Departments of Oral Surgery and the AEGD program) and local practicing dentists and physicians. Our research involves orofacial pain, oral premalignant disorders, interprofessional education outcomes, and markers for response to treatment of mucosal disorders.
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic
The Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic specializes in three-dimensional imaging of the head and neck using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology and provides support for research, as well as clinical activities, inside and outside Case Western Reserve University. Three-dimensional images provide a more accurate representation of our patients, since patients are three-dimensional entities. A more accurate representation results in a more accurate diagnosis, and potentially a more effective treatment. The clinic provides access to this technology, offers educational services through CE courses, and provides clinical service by imaging patients referred by outside practitioners.
