CWRU enhances recycling program with QR code integration and waste sorting game

Case Western Reserve University has rolled out updates to its recycling program, making it easier for the campus community to reduce waste.

A new QR code system on landfill bin signs allows students to quickly determine if the items they want to throw away can be recycled or belong in the landfill. Scanning the code takes students to the CWRU recycling page, where they can use a new search tool to look up specific items to see how to dispose of them properly.

In addition to providing recycling information, the page now features an interactive game called Clean Stream Park. Players build their own virtual park by successfully sorting different materials into the correct waste streams.

The Office of Energy & Sustainability also reminds the campus to please break down cardboard boxes and place them next to or between recycling and waste bins in common areas, as well as to empty liquids, and remove food from containers before placing them in a recycling bin.
