CTSC Announces Research Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) Themed Pilot

Up to Six $15K-$25K Awards Available to Explore Effective Ways to Collect and Disseminate Clinical Research Participant Race/Ethnicity Data

Among 20,692 U.S.-based trials, on ClinicalTrials.gov between March 1, 2000-March 9, 2020, with reported results (representing 4.76M enrollees), only 43% reported any race/ethnicity data. A new report from the Committee on Improving Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research recommends development of a new Department of Health and Human Services task force to examine equity in research and ensure data collection, including:

  • Standardized requirements for the submission of demographic data to ClinicalTrials.gov;
  • Representation data requirements for journal publications; and
  • Coverage guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that consider representativeness.

We’ve all heard or read a lot about the lack of diversity in clinical trials. However, where does that data come from? How can we ensure data integrity for those claims (positive or negative) when we do not have consistency in racial/ethnic data collection and dissemination?

REDI Pilot Funding Opp

Racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in clinical research. According to Food and Drug Administration data, in 2020, 75% of trial participants were white, 11% were Hispanic, 8% were Black or African American, and 6% were Asian.

The Research Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) Pilot Funding Opportunity aims to add fuel to the collective fire and readiness to elevate transparency and accountability related to clinical research participant race/ethnicity data collection and dissemination. By creating and/or identifying effective mechanisms to collect and disseminate race/ethnicity data now, our region will be able to advance past speculation about our current state and move forward toward implementation of processes and acceptance of norms as it relates to collecting race/ethnicity data.
