Working across CTSC institutions, the Community Engaged Research team fosters collaboration and authentic community partnerships with researchers.
CER resources range from consultations, co-learning experiences, community engagement studios and a growing community/academic network of experts intended to move research along the translational spectrum from idea to funded project and beyond. Consultation services are available for new and established investigators and community partners with an interest in community engaged research in partnership with CTSC institutions across Northeast Ohio.

With input from our partners, our CER team will be working over the duration of the CTSC grant to develop different experiences that allow for capacity building for both our faculty and community organizations. Future topics for co-learning activities may include sustainable partnerships, power-sharing, cultural humility, and coordinating outreach to community. Community Engagement (CE) Studios are an evidence-based consultative model to support investigators seeking feedback from community and key partners on study design, implementation, translation, dissemination, and/or sustainability. Our CE Studio team will link community and other partners from the CERNetwork to directly inform key decision points of your research project and build community-academic partnerships. Our CER team is working to connect the many networks and expertise, across the Northern Ohio Community and Academic landscapes with capacity to promote partnership synergy with key partners has been a cornerstone approach of our CTSC. Building on these successes, we will expand and enhance connectivity and engagement with a robust network of local, regional, statewide, and national CER partnerships that address social determinants of health, structural racism, and access to high quality care. Mentoring is a key component to the successful development of all academic investigators. While there are numerous mentorship and professional development programs abound across the many institutions in Northeast Ohio, none focus exclusively on the challenges associated with community engaged research such as fostering extensive and mutually beneficial partnerships with community members and community-serving organizations. Additionally, pilot grant funding initiatives are more likely to benefit awardees when additional supports such as mentorship are included with the funding. Building on successes of the Center for Health Equity, Engagement, Education and Research’s (CHEEER) community engaged research pilot grant program, Community-Based Research Network, and over 20 years of research mentorship, this program will work with early-stage investigators (ESI) and/or those new to community engaged research to amplify their skills in conducting this important research. This program will meaningfully increase the number of proficient investigators in this important and growing sector of translational science. This program will align with a National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) CTSA national initiative, CTSA Community of Practice -- Advancing the Science of Mentorship. We will collaborate and pull from the resources and models being developed nationally to pilot and build a more evidence based and impactful research mentoring network.
