First-year students: Plan ahead for registration

Spring 2025 course registration will open for first-year undergraduates on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 a.m. Eastern. This is also listed in the "Classes & Enrollment" tile in SIS and is sometimes referred to as your “enrollment appointment.”

To prepare for a successful registration, follow the steps below.

Act to remove any pre-registration holds in SIS

Any holds on your account in SIS will prevent you from registering for courses. You can check for holds in the Tasks tile in SIS.

Possible holds you may see could include:

  • Registration Advising Hold: To remove this hold, meet with your pre-major advisor (before major declaration) or major advisor (if you recently declared).  After meeting to discuss your spring classes, they will lift your Registration Advising Hold. Your four-year advisor CANNOT lift your Registration Advising Hold.
  • Explore Program Hold: To remove this hold, you must complete the required Explore Program events (two if you started at CWRU this Fall 2024; six if you started at CWRU in Spring 2024, with at least one in each of three categories). You can register for events via CampusGroups; don’t forget to “check-in” at your event via the unique QR code provided by the host. To track your progress, go to your CampusGroups Home page, select "My Activity" from the menu column on the left, followed by "My Checklists." Scroll down to Explore. This works best using a computer, rather than a mobile device. If you have questions, please reach out to explore@case.edu.
  • Past Due Balance Hold or other financial holds: You should contact Student Financial Services to make arrangements for paying the balance and having the hold removed. You can also consult with a counselor in University Financial Aid to explore available options for assistance. For a full list of financial holds and how to resolve them, please visit the Student Financial Services website.

Build your schedule in advance and check for conflicts

As you are putting together your schedule, make sure to use your Shopping Cart to identify the courses you plan to take. You can also use Stellic, the degree-planning tool in SIS, which will help you track completed degree requirements and plan courses for future semesters. Access Stellic in SIS via the Academics > Academic Progress tiles, and then select “My Academic Requirements” from the menu on the left.

Step-by-step guides and video resources are available on the University Registrar’s Degree Planning for Students page.

Request permissions for courses, if applicable

If you are planning to register for a course that requires any kind of permission (instructor consent, closed course, requisites or time conflict), remember that you can submit a permission request in SIS. A permission request requires that you provide the instructor with details of your circumstances and the reason for your request.

Do you need to take your Academic Inquiry Seminar (AIQS) course this spring?

If you didn’t take your Academic Inquiry Seminar (AIQS) this fall, you will see a placeholder on your spring schedule for a three-credit course, “AIQS 851S”, to remind you that you need to keep room in your schedule for this course. Placement in your Academic Inquiry Seminar works differently than registration for other courses, and is outlined in this recent FYI article from the Writing Program.

If you are currently taking your Academic Inquiry Seminar this fall, you will not see this placeholder and do not need to plan for this in the spring.

Consider declaring your major

As you plan your spring schedule and engagement, now is also a great time to declare your major. When you declare your major, you will be assigned a faculty member within the department to help guide your progression within the degree program. Keep the timing of declaring your major in mind with regard to course registration. If your advising hold is not released prior to major declaration, only your new advisor will be able to lift the hold.

If you have questions about course registration, holds or procedures to follow in SIS, please contact your faculty advisor or four-year advisor for assistance.
