Wayne Hawthorne is a senior licensing manager in the Technology Transfer Office and the office’s liaison with Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership. His activities focus on identifying new and cutting-edge technologies for commercialization through licensing and new company formation. He manages the protection of these new discoveries through the filing of patents and trademarks. He primarily facilitates these commercialization activities from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Hawthorne’s primary commercialization focus is on various types of medical devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning, neuro/photomodulation technologies and medical imaging.
Hawthorne has more than 19 years of experience in technology commercialization and 44 years of total experience in medical devices and imaging modalities, as well as AI/deep-learning technologies. Hawthorne has taken a “hands-on” approach, working directly with researchers, clinicians, engineers and other technicians throughout his career. His main career highlights include a broad business development and technology commercialization background, including intellectual protection strategies, partnerships and collaborations, license negotiations and contract enforcement. He has worked with universities, various federal and state government agencies, and in the private sector.
