In addition to research awards, there are other agreements at Case Western Reserve University that may be required to execute the objectives of a research project—regardless of funding.

The Data Use Agreements and Material Transfer Agreements (DUA/MTA) Unit of the Office of Pre-Award Services and Agreements (PASA) is responsible for the review, determination, drafting, negotiation and execution of all agreements relating to the transfer or use of human subjects’ research data, biospecimens and materials for the entire university. Investigators should contact the DUA/MTA Unit once they know they will need to transfer data, biospecimens and/or materials for research or other purposes. Contact:

Types of Agreements

Data Use Agreements

Data Use Agreements (DUAs) establish the legal terms and conditions of the transfer and use of research data. Contact, or read more about DUAs.

Material Transfer Agreements

Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) are for the unfunded transfer of tangible research assets to be used for the recipient’s research own purposes. Contact, or read more about MTAs.

Biospecimen Transfer Agreements

Biospecimen Transfer Agreements (BTAs) establish the legal terms and conditions of the transfer and use of biospecimens (also referred to as “samples”) for research-related purposes. Read more about BTAs.

Non-Disclosure Agreements

A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is a legally binding contract that establishes a confidential relationship. The party or parties signing the agreement agree that sensitive information they may obtain will not be made available to others. Occasionally collaborators want to enter into a NDA prior to beginning discussions with CWRU faculty or staff about a potential or ongoing research project or collaboration. The Office of General Counsel or the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) negotiates these agreements on behalf of the university and person needing the NDA. Please contact Daniel Pendergast at with questions or to determine who should negotiate your NDA. To learn more about NDAs, visit TTO Forms and Policies

VA Agreements

CWRU occasionally enters into agreement with the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center or the Louis Stokes Cleveland: Research Foundation Memorandum of Understanding. Guidance for entering into these agreements is on the RADAR Training website.
