Housed in the Office of Research and Technology Management, Case Western Reserve’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is the steward of all intellectual property (IP) at the university. As the nexus of IP activity on campus, we strive to help researchers navigate the path from ideation through licensing and venture creation.
What the Technology Transfer Office offers
Our team of licensing experts provides intellectual property and commercialization support spanning the research and development continuum—from proposal development through licensing and startup support.
Help with Basic and Translational Research Funds
As one component of our services, TTO helps review IP terms of new grants and also works with the translational programs on campus, including the Council to Advance Human Health (CAHH), the Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership, the Case Technology Validation and Startup Fund Program (CTP) and the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC).
Assessing, Protecting, and Licensing Innovations
In partnership with inventors and our networks, the TTO team decides how the university can best protect and invest in intellectual property and determines the best path of translation and ultimate commercialization for the university’s intellectual assets. That may be through a startup company or working with an existing company partner who can effectively commercialize it.

Supporting Startup Success
The office works to assist new startup companies with finding mentorship, space, and funding through partnerships with the Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship, 11000 Cedar and regional venture capitalists.
Consistent with CWRU’s mission, the office is working toward enhancing its role in the promotion of an inclusive culture of global citizenship by exploring issues of access to essential medicines by resource-limited countries. This work includes moving toward the Universities Allied for Essential Medicine's Global Access Licensing Framework.
