This body of work focuses on the freedom of creative expression for Black men and boys riding pedal and dirt bikes. Black sees beautiful and necessary innocent rage being expressed by riders as he captures them popping wheelies and building bonds through bikes. There is a high risk when expressing yourself freely and uncontained as a Black rider, often seen as a threat, disobedience, ruthlessness and danger. Even so, these riders carry on and demonstrate the power of being yourself and being free. The Social Justice Institute is sponsoring this exhibit from Sept. 21-Nov. 17 at Kelvin Smith Library's second floor gallery. The library is open to the public until 8 p.m. Join us on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 4-8 p.m. at CWRU's Kelvin Smith Library (11055 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, 44106) for an opening reception with appetizers and refreshments, and a special presentation by Donald Black Jr. at 5:30 pm.
