Tips for Staying Healthy on Campus

Flu Season Safety Tips

Flu season is upon us; it is important that you stay healthy and protected from influenza. Environments like college campuses have close quarters, and buzzing students with busy schedules make it easy for illnesses to spread. Please read below for some helpful tips you can take to reduce your chances of getting sick before spring break and midterms. By taking the precautions below, you can reduce the risk of illness and help keep the entire campus community safe.

The best way to protect against the flu is by getting a flu shot. Students can schedule a flu shot through myhealthconnect.case.edu or visit a local pharmacy to receive vaccination.

Remember to wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used as an alternative.

Make sure you are covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow to prevent the spread of germs.

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water helps support the immune system. Proper nutrition and hydration can go a long way in staying healthy.

Lack of sleep can weaken the immune system. Make sure you are prioritizing sleep, especially during flu season.

If you do become ill, it is important that you stay home from class and avoid close contact with others until you are no longer contagious, typically after 24 hours without fever.

Disinfect commonly touched areas such as phones, keyboards, and door handles, as viruses can live on surfaces for several hours.

If you develop flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills), we encourage you to seek medical attention early. The flu can often be treated with antiviral medications when caught early.

If you have any concerns about your health, please reach out to University Health and Counseling Services at 216-368-2450. Students who are feeling ill can make appointments with health services at myhealthconnect.case.edu or by calling 216.368.2450.
