April 20 Message to Faculty/Staff: Guidance Regarding Summer Sponsored Project Research

To Our Research Community,

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe.

I write today to provide updated guidance about sponsored research as we approach the end of the semester.

Case Western Reserve is committed to preserving as many existing positions as possible as we continue our modified research activities under the governor’s stay-home order. To that end, we have permitted research to be done remotely and also created a special COVID-19 leave bank for people unable to work while off campus.

Over the past several weeks, we have permitted continued payment of individuals on sponsored programs, even if they could not support research efforts from home. After this semester, however, we will be unable to extend this same arrangement.

Offers of employment for new sponsored-project-funded positions should be made only if the duties involved can be performed on or off campus. The university will not support compensation of individuals unable to contribute to a project’s progress.

Similarly, summer salary supported by sponsored projects (whether for faculty, staff or students) is reserved for those able to perform the work promised to the sponsor. Please ensure that all sponsored project funding allocated to summer salary appointments actually advances the project in ways that align with the assurances previously provided to sponsors.

If you have any questions about this guidance, and/or need assistance to interpret the conditions of a sponsored project award, please contact Associate Vice President for Research Stephanie Endy at stephanie.endy@case.edu.

Best,

Suzanne M. Rivera, PhD
Vice President for Research & Technology Management
