Steinhagen has a special interest in hereditary colon and rectal cancer syndromes such as Lynch syndrome and FAP, and early age of onset CRC. As part of her training, she did a research fellowship specifically focused on this patient population. She is also interested in disparities in cancer care and access to guideline-based treatment for patients.

She provides direct teaching in the clinical setting (wards, clinic, and operating room), develops educational programming and sessions for trainees, and leads curricula. She holds several leadership roles in education and has mentored several trainees through education-related projects that have been developed, implemented, assessed, and published.
