Your Future in Cancer Research Starts Here
If you are curious about science, medicine, health, or helping people, the Youth Engaged in Science (YES) Program could be your first step toward an exciting future.
The YES Program is a paid summer experience for high school students interested in cancer research and healthcare careers. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, The American Cancer Society, and hosted by Case CCC, YES gives students the chance to work with real cancer scientists in professional research labs.
For seven weeks, students gain hands-on experience, build college and career skills, and learn what it’s like to work in science and medicine.

Why Apply?
Earn a $2,500 Stipend
Students who fully participate and successfully complete the program receive a $2,500 stipend.
Work in a Real Research Lab
Spend the summer working directly with scientists on cancer research projects and learn how discoveries are made in the lab.

Strengthen skills that colleges and future employers value, including:

What You'll Do
Week 1: Science Bootcamp
Begin with training that prepares you for success in the lab, including:
- Laboratory safety
- Research techniques
- Introduction to cancer biology
- Scientific thinking and problem-solving
Weeks 2–7: Hands-On Research Experience
Work full-time (35 hours per week) in cancer research labs with leading scientists from Case CCC.
Lunch & Learn Sessions
Lunch sessions include:
- College preparation
- Career exploration
- Science and health topics
- Guest speakers and mentors
End-of-Summer Research Celebration
Present your research findings at a closing celebration.
Scientific Enrichment Opportunity (SEO)
If you attend a CMSD or East Cleveland City School, you may be selected for the program's Scientific Enrichment Opportunity (SEO). It provides:
- Additional career development support
- One-on-one mentoring
- College preparation guidance
- Advocacy and mentorship for future success
- Enhanced stipend opportunities
Who Can Apply for YES?
You must:
- Attend a Cleveland-area high school
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be at least 14 years old before research activities begin
