Heather McKee Hurwitz, PhD, is a Project Staff researcher in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute and an expert in cancer disparities and the social determinants of health. A sociologist by training, she specializes in diversity and inclusion in regard to patient experience, community outreach, cancer prevention and screening, patient engagement, and patient recruitment and participation in cancer clinical trials. Her studies examine the particular lived experiences and meanings of disparities to people who endure them. Furthermore, she analyzes the roots of these disparities in structural, systemic, and institutional barriers to health equity.
