Information Needed to Complete Application

The following information is needed to complete the application: 

  • A copy of your transcripts. 
  • The names and contact information for two references. One reference must be a science teacher/professor, while the other can be a personal reference. Your references may be contacted if we need more information about your application. 
  • Numerical ranking of the top five mentors you would like to work with. We do our best to accommodate each applicant’s request, but numerous factors are considered when matching CanSUR scholars with mentors, and we cannot guarantee placement into the lab of your top choices.

Applicant Eligibility

Due to National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines, CanSUR scholars must be U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Creating a unique CanSUR scholar cohort that fosters distinctiveness is a key component of the NIH strategy to identify, develop, support, and maintain the quality of a world-class biomedical research workforce. Sustaining the nation’s position as a global leader in scientific discovery and innovation depends on a strong pool of highly talented scientists from an array of backgrounds who can further the NIH’s mission. The CanSUR program is committed to building an exceptional student and faculty population, and highly encourages qualified individuals from all backgrounds with a passion for biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences to apply.

Applications for summer 2026 will open on Nov. 1, 2025.
