Types of JD Financial Assistance

Financing your Juris Doctor (JD) is a major commitment, but Case Western Reserve University School of Law offers an array of scholarships recognizing outstanding achievement, leadership, and commitment across multiple fields of law. From merit-based scholarships to loans and specialized fellowships, our goal is to make your legal education accessible.

Explore our Specialty Area Merit-Based Scholarships

Each merit-based scholarship is designed to support and empower students who demonstrate exceptional promise and interest in a particular area. Awards are renewable each year based on good academic standing and do not require a particular focus or course of study during the JD program.

Every applicant with an exceptionally strong record is considered for a scholarship—no extra forms needed. If you apply for admission before Feb. 1, you have a greater chance of receiving an award.

External Scholarships

We encourage all applicants to seek external scholarships to maximize your education funding—whether state- or privately funded.

These types of awards—typically applied evenly across fall and spring semesters—won’t affect your merit-based aid from CWRU. However, total financial aid—including outside awards—cannot exceed your cost of attendance.

Student Loans

Federal and private loan programs are available to help cover tuition and reasonable living expenses. Loans must be repaid, and may be government-sponsored low-interest loans or regular bank loans. Eligibility may be based on financial need, and most programs require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

To be considered for loans, you must complete the financial aid application process. We recommend starting as soon as you're admitted—ideally before the end of June—as it may take up to three months to secure funding for the fall semester.
