Applications for the Master of Patent Practice (MPP) program are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. The deadline for fall is July 1.

The MPP program seeks candidates with backgrounds in engineering, computer science and the physical or biological sciences. Applicants must have good academic records from fully accredited universities and colleges. Students admitted to the program should already hold undergraduate degrees.

Application Requirements

  • Personal Statement: Limited to 1 page. Please explain why you are interested in the MPP program and provide a brief assessment of your eligibility to sit for the patent bar.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation: Recommendation letters may be: 
    • Mailed by the applicant in a sealed and signed envelope;
    • mailed by the recommenders; or
    • Emailed directly by the recommender to
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions with notarized translations into English if applicable; the transcripts may be mailed in sealed envelopes or electronic transcripts can be sent to

  • TOEFL Scores (if applicable): The minimum acceptable score per the university is 90 if internet-based and 577 if paper based.
  • Affidavit of Financial Support required for F1 and J1 visa documentation (if applicable)

Instructions for Application

To Start Application:

  • Create a user name and log-in
  • After log-in click “Start Application”
  • Select: “Degree Seeking” Application
  • Enrollment information: Scroll to the bottom and under the ‘School of Law’ section, select ‘Patent Practice’
  • Degree is MA
  • Academic Plan is Patent Practice (MA)
    • There are not any Sub-Plan/Concentration or Specializations
  • The term should be Fall 2019
  • There are no dual degrees at this time
  • The Case Institution code is: 3000957 (also searchable using “Case”)
  • The only required test is the TOEFL, if applicable

Applications are only reviewed once they are complete. Once you have a completed application you will be able to track its progress via Hobsons using the same login information.

MPP Financial Aid and Scholarships

Merit scholarships are available through the Master of Patent Practice Program. Other types of aid may include federal and/or state loans, and financial assistance through the military and employers.
