LCME Tip of the Month

Hello everyone – Happy March!

This is the third in our LCME Monthly Tip Series

Tip #3 – Assuring adequacy of Space for students  -  Study, Relaxation and Storage Space (Element 5.11)

There is a significant opportunity for improved messaging around the adequacy of Space in the Clinical /Hospital Settings.
Students rated these items low on their Independent Study Assessment (ISA).

Space, as recognized by the LCME, includes Study Space, Relaxation Space and Space for Secure Storageof personal items.

We would ask that you would include slides and information about potential spaces at your clinical site during your orientation
See attached slides for examples.

Hello everyone - - Happy Leap Month!

This it the second in our LCME Monthly Tip Series

 Tip #2 - The 100% Assessment Trifecta

  • 100% Direct Observation of students (H&P ), 100% completion of Mid-rotation Evaluations, and 100% of End of Rotation Evaluations (EOR) completed on Time.

For the upcoming LCME visit, Prior Citations will be particularly scrutinized.

One Standard the School received a citation in was Standard 9: Teaching, Supervision, Assessment, Student, and patient safety --- particularly as it relates to Direct Observation

We must have 100% of students say they were observed in the key portions of History and Physical for each required clerkship.

Data for this will come from the AAMC graduation questionnaire (GQ) and from the Independent Student Assessment (ISA).

At your mid-rotation meeting with the students please make sure you ask students if they have been directly observed and if not, please develop a plan to have them observed.

Lastly, when communicating with your preceptors (faculty or residents), please remind them that direct observation is a vital part of teaching and assessing students.

Thanks for all you do!

Hello everyone - - Happy New Year!

As we start the new year, we wanted to start sharing a Monthly Tip related to our upcoming LCME accreditation.

Tip #1 - - Clerkship Director Review of their Clinical Faculty

The LCME expects Clerkship Directors are regularly reviewing and acting on student evaluations of their clinical faculty.

One way this is accomplished is through the end of clerkship evaluations that students complete. There is a section where the students can highlight strong teachers and a section where they highlight faculty they have concerns about.

Additionally, CAS allows Clerkship Directors to review their departmental faculty evaluations on a regular basis. The LCME expectation is after each rotation. We have attached a PowerPoint to outline the process. If you don’t have access to this data in CAS, please let us know.

For any new faculty members teaching during your clerkships, please double check that they have an active faculty appointment. You can query the CWRU Faculty Directory, found HERE, by searching by name. This link requires your CWRU ID log on.

Thanks for all you do!
