Incoming First-Year Students - Fall Semester

Once you have been accepted to Case Western Reserve University you will gain access to the University Roadmap on May 7 and can access the housing application. The Housing process will begin in June 2026.

Case Western Reserve University has a two-year residency requirement. All first- and second-year unmarried undergraduate students who do not live at a parent's permanent residence within 40 miles of campus must live on-campus and participate in the University board plan. If you are eligible to commute, you will need to complete a housing release request.

Lifestyle Characteristics

This list of four questions about your lifestyle will help you find a roommate and choose a room with someone who closely matches your lifestyle characteristics.

Lifestyle Characteristics

Gender Inclusive Housing

The Gender-Inclusive Housing program is an option that allows students to live in housing not based on residents’ gender identity.

First Year Room Preferences

Almost all first-year students live in a double room with a roommate in one of our 4 first-year communities. You will be asked to list each community in priority order. You can also list your preference for a single or double room. Single rooms are very limited, so students should expect to be placed in a double room. You can also list a preferred roommate.

Searching for a Roommate

Once you complete your housing application, you can search for a roommate through our online roommate matching system on MyHousing. You search for roommates by lifestyle characteristics or through suggestions based on your answers to the lifestyle characteristics questions. Create a group, then invite your roommate to join it. They will need to confirm the invitation. Once your group is complete, you can submit your group for the room assignment process. This must be completed by July 1 to be placed in a room with your selected roommate.

It is not necessary to choose a roommate. If you don’t choose a roommate, you will be placed with another student.

Medical Accommodations

If you have a medical condition that you feel requires a specific medical accommodation, please contact Disability Resources to discuss what medical documentation you are required to provide to their office. Disability Resources informs our office of all approved medical accommodations, and we will note all students’ needs in our database. If a student is given an accommodation for a single room, we will assign the student before before room assignments begin for the general population
