The Cleveland Cusco Connection (CCC) Virtual Elective was created and implemented by faculty and student Peru Health Outreach Project (PHOP) leaders in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide an alternative global health learning experience for students. The Cleveland Cusco Connection elective was awarded a Case Western Reserve University Scholarship in Teaching Award in 2021.
This is a student-led elective which includes six monthly bilingual virtual sessions with students participating from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, and Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco. Sessions focus on developing medical foreign language skills, international collaboration, and perspectives in global health.
Sessions include topic presentations, large group discussions, and small group discussions with physician facilitators.
Requirements for elective credit (may vary from year to year):
- Presence and participation in minimum of five of six sessions
- Serve as student leader for one of six sessions
- Complete pre and post self-assessment survey and elective evaluation
- Two reflective writing assignments
