This May, the Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law will be hosting its second annual Junior Environmental Law Scholar Workshop for law school pre-tenured faculty and fellows who are currently pursuing teaching careers in environmental law, energy law, climate law or natural resources law. The in-person gathering will commence with dinner on Wednesday, May 21 and continue on May 22 at the law school.

Junior Scholars will present a work in progress and receive feedback from distinguished environmental, energy, climate and natural resources senior faculty.

The Burke Center has lined up an exceptional panel of senior faculty to work with the Junior Scholars. The senior faculty participating include Wendy Wagner (Texas), Carol Rose (Yale, Arizona – Emeritus), Marcilynn Burke (Tulane), Hari Osofsky (Northwestern), and Case Western Reserve's own Jonathan Adler and Victor Flatt.

In addition to presenting works in progress, a portion of the day's program will be devoted to discussions of career trajectory, scholarship placement and teaching issues. The Center is particularly excited this year that two of outstanding environmental law scholars are experienced deans. This will enhance the discussions of the relationship between junior faculty and administration. In addition to the formal program, the in-person workshop will also offer an opportunity to informally interact with the senior scholars as well as the other junior scholars.

Junior scholars who wish to participate should contact Victor B. Flatt, the Coleman P. Burke Chair in Environmental Law and Associate Director of the Burke Environmental Law Center at Case by email by Friday March 21, and include a 200-300 word abstract of the scholarship to be presented. Up to six junior scholars will be selected, and will be notified by March 27. Junior scholars will then be expected to submit at least a 15 page work in progress by May 1, which will then be distributed to the Senior Scholars and other participants.

Junior Scholars will be selected for participation based on the quality of their works in progress proposal and the expectation of the production of a high quality final scholarly product. Participants will need to commit to an arrival on campus by 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, and a departure later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. All meals, hotel, and transportations costs will be covered by the Burke Environmental Law Center. Depending on travel options, 2 nights in a hotel may be provided.
