As the first woman, first Black person, and first nurse to serve as president and CEO of The MetroHealth System, Dr. Airica Steed is fighting passionately to reverse racial disparities and make sure every person has an equal chance at a long, healthy life. That is just one part of her bold vision for the future of the $1.7 billion, 8,000-employee safety net health system.
Dr. Steed became MetroHealth’s leader on Dec. 5, 2022, after serving as executive vice president/system chief operating officer of Sinai Chicago Health System and President of Mount Sinai and Sinai Children’s Hospital.
As a fourth-generation nurse, her vision for MetroHealth is focused on excellent patient care, innovation, accelerating growth, and health equity.
Her turnaround of Sinai Chicago led Crain’s Chicago Business to name her a Notable Black Leader and Executive of 2022 and Becker’s Hospital Review to highlight her as one of 75 Black Healthcare Leaders to Know in 2022. In February, Modern Healthcare named her one of its Top Women Leaders for 2023.
She holds a doctorate in education from Olivet Nazarene University, a master of business administration from Governors State University, a bachelor of science in nursing from Rush University and is pursuing a master's in international relations with a focus on healthcare from Harvard University Extension School.
