Think[box] Derby

Join us for our first annual design-and-build challenge: the think[box] Derby!

1-5 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025

Sear think[box], Floors 1-2

Free and open to all!

In this competition, (almost) anything goes.

Cars can be made from carrots, cardboard, or carbon fiber—your imagination is the limit*!

*University rules apply. Cars should not pose a threat to spectators or damage our tracks.

The primary design constraint is the width of your axles. Wheels should be spaced ~1.75 to 2 inches apart to fit on our 40-foot tracks. Sensors will capture your total race time and maximum speed

Race categories

Compete in two thrilling categories:

• Fastest across the finish line — Speed demons, this one’s for you.

• Slowest across the finish line — A true test of precision and control.

Or conquer a bonus challenge:

• On top of the world — Can you stop at the top of the hill without rolling down the other side?

• Backtrack — Climb our track in reverse! Start at the finish line and end at the starting line.

Event Highlights

Beyond the races, there’s something for everyone:

• Screen-printed T-shirts — Create your own event keepsake.

• Delicious Food — Fuel up while you cheer on your friends.

• Derby "Build Bar" — Build a car from scratch on site or make a last minute fix (it’s free!)

• Audience Choice Awards — Vote for your favorites in categories like "Most Creative" and "Most Epic Fail."

Build your car your way

Craft a car at home, at a free pop-up, or on site at think[box] on Derby day. Materials will be provided, while supplies last!

• March 25, 3-5 p.m. – Noyes House Multipurpose Room
• March 26, 5-7 p.m. – Sears think[box] Collaboration Floor (Floor 2) 
• April 1, 3-5 p.m. – Wade Commons Red Cat Room
