Drinking alcohol can be a part of social life for many college students, but it’s important to do so responsibly. Understanding your limits, looking out for friends and being aware of potential risks can help ensure that alcohol-related decisions don’t turn into a dangerous situation. Here are some tips to help you make informed and safe choices when it comes to alcohol.
Trust your instincts
If something feels off, trust yourself. That inner “uh-oh” feeling is there for a reason. If a situation seems unsafe, don’t ignore it—remove yourself and seek help if necessary.
Peer pressure can be tough, but remember that you always have the right to say no to drinking. Make choices that align with your personal comfort and well-being.
Know your limit
It’s important to understand how alcohol affects you and set personal limits. Binge drinking—defined as consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period—can have serious consequences, including:
- Risky behavior: Impaired judgment can lead to dangerous situations.
- Alcohol poisoning: Drinking too much too fast can shut down critical body functions.
- Blackouts: Gaps in memory due to heavy drinking can be disorienting and risky.
Stick with your friends
There’s safety in numbers. Always use the buddy system and stay in groups when going out. Keep an eye on each other and make sure everyone gets home safely. If a friend seems too intoxicated or is in distress, don’t leave them alone—help them find a safe way home or seek medical attention if needed.
Recognize the signs of alcohol poisoning
Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency. If you or someone you know experiences any of the following symptoms, seek immediate help:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Slow, irregular breathing
- Unconsciousness
- Seizures
Don’t hesitate to call for medical assistance—acting quickly can save a life.
Use Spartan Safe and Spartan Ride apps
Technology can be a valuable tool in staying safe. The Spartan Safe app has a Friend Walk feature that allows you to share your location with a friend in real time. If something goes wrong, your friend can notify Public Safety for assistance.
Additionally, the Spartan Ride app offers Safe Ride transportation from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., seven days a week. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need a ride, take advantage of this resource.
Consider potential consequences
Unsafe choices while drinking can lead to conduct consequences, financial strains and legal trouble, such as:
- Meeting with the Student Conduct Office and having a violation on your conduct record.
- Potential medical care and ambulance costs, which can be a significant financial burden
- Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated (OVI) convictions and their serious legal penalties.
Make smart choices
Drinking responsibly means being mindful of your safety, your friends and the potential consequences of alcohol use. Whether you choose to drink or not, prioritizing your well-being and making informed decisions will help you stay safe and enjoy your time at CWRU.
If you ever find yourself in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to Public Safety for help. Your safety is always the top priority.
